WELL…….this is something that we don’t get every day…..

Earlier this week we took in two greyhound boys from a ‘trainer’ who had been racing them on an unregulated, or ‘flapping’ track. Apparently he has no need for these dogs as he is off on holiday and getting a couple of new pups when he returns. These boys need vaccinations and neutering, which Forever Hounds Trust will have to pay for, and there are also kennelling, feeding and transport costs to cover. So, we asked the owner for a donation towards these costs.
Despite the promise of some money, that wasn’t what our volunteer was given when they went to collect the dogs. Instead, they were presented with A SMALL BOX OF WEETABIX and A LOAF OF BREAD!!
Well, thank you for the donation, but that’s not really going to help us much. The vets we use are lovely and very helpful, but don’t take breakfast foods as payment. And we won’t be feeding it to the dogs either. They enjoyed a delicious and nutritious supper thanks to our friends at Burns Pet Nutrition.
Why do some people think it is OK to treat greyhounds like a commodity that can be discarded when they are no longer wanted for racing? Once again a rescue charity is left picking up the pieces and footing the bill to look after dogs leaving the racing industry. These dogs deserve better than this.
But, at least for these two lovely dogs – who we have named, rather aptly, HOVIS and BIXIE, they’re future is now secure.
Massive thanks to our wonderful volunteers who travel miles to collect dogs like Hovis and Bixie, often covering the fuel costs themselves. If petrol stations start accepting Weetabix as payment, we’ll let you know.
To all our supporters, who help us continue being the voice for greyhounds and lurchers let down by humans, thank you.
