Bowie is a handsome lurcher boy of about 7 years old. He has had something of an unsettled life recently, but is now safe in our care and ready to settle down in his forever home!
Although we do have some history on Bowie, most of it is second hand and we don’t know everything about his past. What we do know is that he has spent a good amount of time in a foster home environment previously, and was described as a lovely boy who thrived on human contact. He liked to be with his humans, was very affectionate and would bark to let them know if he wasn’t getting enough fuss! Bowie wasn’t initially housetrained, but quickly learned to toilet outside. He did have some worries about being physically moved off the sofa and would growl to communicate his concerns – this situation is easily avoided by using treats to encourage Bowie to jump down from the furniture if needed, and reward him for doing so.
Since coming into our care, Bowie has been assessed with various other dogs and proven himself to be a sociable boy. During his stay in a previous kennels, he was reported to have shown some reactivity towards other dogs (barking and lunging on-lead) but we haven’t seen any of this behaviour during our assessments. We feel that Bowie was probably very stressed during this time, which may have caused the reactive behaviour. In order to set him up to succeed in his new home, he’ll need to be walked in areas without too many other dogs, especially off-lead dogs who might run over to him. He has been very friendly when meeting dogs on quiet walks and would enjoy having some doggie friends, but would prefer not to share his food, toys and sofa with another dog at home!
Bowie is totally food obsessed and will do anything for a treat, which means he will be easy to train – but he’ll also help himself to any food left within his reach (and he can reach pretty high!). He loves playing with toys, but can try to fetch the toy before you’ve managed to pick it up! Playing with two toys and picking one up whilst he chases the other is the best approach.
Bowie travels well in the car and sleeps happily overnight, as long as he’s allowed to have his dog bed in the bedroom. He doesn’t try to get into bed with you, but struggles to settle downstairs on his own. For this reason we feel he might struggle with spending a lot of time on his own, and will need a gradual introduction to short periods alone.
Bowie is a really sweet, funny boy who just needs a chance to finally settle down permanently. If you think you could give him the stability he’s missed out on so far, please get in touch!
