Meet Dougie, our resident comedian! Dougie is a young, lively saluki cross who loves to make people laugh. He’s a real character with bags of personality who is looking for his forever home. He’s affectionate, playful and loves to cuddle up on the sofa once he’s been tired out.
Dougie has plenty of energy and enthusiasm, so is looking for active adopters who are keen to continue with his training plan in the home. Although Dougie loves the company of other dogs, he does struggle with over-excitement and frustration when first meeting new dogs, which can lead to barking, growling and lunging on-lead when encountering dogs on walks, even though his initial motivation is to make friends. This response can be avoided by rewarding Dougie for checking in with his handler to keep his frustration levels down until he’s calm enough to say hello. Our staff at the Centre have been working with Dougie, teaching him better strategies for coping with his excitement and he is already doing much better. We wouldn’t class Dougie as dog reactive at the moment – however he could easily develop a reactivity issue if his experiences in his new home are not positive and constructive. He will need an adopter who enjoys training, walking areas without too many other dogs (especially off-lead dogs!) and options to take a different route to avoid dogs when needed.
Dougie does need to live with a resident dog, since he can become very distressed if he is isolated from others. He is very playful and bouncy, so will need a doggie friend who won’t be put off by this! Dougie’s new family will need to make a few trips to our Centre in Devon so that he can be gradually introduced to the resident dog(s). We may be able to consider placing Dougie as the only dog in a home where he would not be left alone at all (including overnight!). It is likely that he will struggle with time alone in general, so he’s looking for a home where someone is around most of the time even if there is a resident dog.
Dougie is currently underweight as you can see from his photos, but has been steadily gaining weight since his arrival. He does have a very sensitive stomach and will need to be fed a specific, high quality diet in his new home.
Dougie is a young dog and behaves as you would expect for his age – he is energetic, bouncy and full of beans! If you’re looking for an active companion who will make you laugh everyday, please get in touch!
