Rowling is a sweet dog who is somewhat unsure about the world, and needs time and space to come out of his shell. A handsome blue ex-racing greyhound, Rowling seeks out contact, and enjoys very gentle ear scratches and chin rubs. He will press his head into your lap to let you know when he’s ready for his fuss! However, he is currently uncomfortable with much more handling, and he will need a patient family who will wait for him to come to them; ideally an adult only household, or one with older teenagers who won’t overwhelm him.
Because he’s new to the concept of being a pet, Rowling isn’t really sure what toys are for, but he has shown interest in chasing after a ball so should become more playful once settled at home. He is very food motivated, which should make reward-based training and positive interactions easier, and he takes his treats very gently. He does eat quickly and will raid the worktops for food given the chance! He just needs to learn that there will always be enough to eat in his new home.
Rowling enjoys the company of other dogs and loves making new friends of all shapes and sizes. He gets on well with the other kennel hounds, and with our test terrier. Pending introductions, he could happily live with both large and small breeds. He has shown some nervousness when out and about, and can be quite unsure about new environments, so will need quiet places to exercise. He walks really well on the lead, and should gain confidence if not pushed out of his comfort zone.
A big lad, Rowling likes his space, and will do best in a big house where he won’t feel cornered. He’s shown interest in getting onto the sofa in our home from home cabin, so his new family should be prepared to find somewhere else to sit! He’s not keen on long journeys and can get travelsick, so would prefer to be a homebody. When he does travel, he’ll need a roomy car where he doesn’t feel trapped.
This gorgeous lad is just waiting for the right family to take him into their lives, where we’re confident he will blossom into an affectionate, devoted companion. Will you be the ones to finally give this Rowling stone a forever home?
As per our current homing situation, please only apply to adopt Rowling if the following criteria applies to you:
- You are an experienced sighthound owner or are willing to follow a training plan designed by our behaviourists, to set you and your dog up for success.
- You don’t have any resident cats or small animals (*during this time we are unable to meaningfully assess for cat tolerance*)
- You live within England and Wales and willing to travel to our kennels in Somerset, Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire.
- You are willing to make several visits to meet a hound before taking them home. Some of our hounds need time to get to know you first.
