We’ve received this lovely update on recently adopted Buck from his wonderful mum and dad. While every dog is different, their story gives a really nice insight into how ex-racing greyhounds may need to adjust as they settle into a home environment.
And remember, we’re always here to support our adopters — our dedicated behaviourist team is on hand to help with any settling-in (or future!) issues you might have.
Buck has settled in really well, and we are so happy to have him with us – we hope he is as happy with us!
We have taken him on a few local walks now, and he seems to have enjoyed them. We have noticed that he “plants” when he sees other dogs, but other than that there are no issues.
After a few initial nights of waking up regularly, he now sleeps through the night. Although, he has started waking us up early in the morning with barks and howls – assuming he’s asking for his breakfast! We think he has decided that time is when he wants us all to get up!
We haven’t left him on his own yet, other than briefly popping out to the car for a few seconds. He immediately looks out the window to see where we are! We are going to start slowly working towards leaving him for short periods. Initially, he followed us around the house constantly and didn’t like it when a bathroom door was closed, but he seems to be slowly relaxing and will now stay on his bed, or the sofa (now his favourite place after ignoring it for a week!). His main distraction is anything relating to food, so we have to be on the ball to not leave anything unguarded – he is the perfect height for the kitchen worktops!
Finally, he is obsessed with picking up socks and shoes, and we often discover he has moved them all around the house!
