The First of October marks National Black Dog Day, which is a chance for Forever Hounds Trust to make a plea on behalf of all the black dogs in our care still looking for their forever home!
But why do black dogs need their own ‘day’? Well, for some reason we are yet to fully understand, black dogs are harder to find homes for than dogs of other colours. Forever Hounds Trust has found that, on average, black dogs spend 30% longer awaiting a forever home than their lighter-coloured canine pals.
It’s a particular problem for greyhounds as so many of them are black. Around 70% of greyhounds are black. This is believed to be as a result of an Irish racing champion greyhound called Top Honcho. Top Honcho sired over 10,000 puppies, and many of those puppies went on to become racing champions and sire their own puppies. Black in the predominant gene. Top Honcho was a black dog.
Anecdotally Forever Hounds Trust have heard that, for some people, black dogs are associated with guard dogs or fierce dogs from myths and legends. We know that black dogs can be harder to photograph than lighter coloured dogs, which could lead to them being overlooked. However, the truth is that, whatever their colour, every greyhound and lurcher deserves a life of happiness in a safe and loving home of their own.
Therefore, on this National Black Dog Day, Forever Hounds Trust is appealing for people to offer a home to a rescued greyhound and lurcher of any colour!

BECKS
Becks is a great big ball of fun! This lurcher boy loves a snuggle. He’s a bit nervous with new people, but is growing in confidence. He would like to live with another, calm, dog, but no cats please!

Bobby is a very handsome male greyhound. He’s about five years old and is very friendly and affectionate.

Diva
Diva is a very sweet female greyhound. She is a bit of a sensitive lass and is looking for a quiet life. She has just come from racing kennels and so everything is new and strange to her at the moment but she is adapting and gaining confidence. She is a sweet and gentle girl and will make a wonderful pet.

Fraser
This two year old male greyhound retired from racing because he didn’t concentrate and just wanted to play. He is a lovely dog to be around and is calm and gentle in the home and walks well on the lead.

Freddy
Freddy is a happy male greyhound who just loves to play with toys. This gentle boy is happiest when in the company of another, calm, dog, and so would like to go to live in a home with another dog.

Lawrence
This five-year-old male greyhound was treated badly before he came to Forever Hounds Trust, so is a little shy. But, he is responding well to our care and is gradually gaining confidence and we can see signs of an affectionate and brave boy emerging. Lawrence has several large scars and his lips have been damaged, but we think he is a very beautiful boy indeed and will make somebody a wonderful companion!

Stevie
Stevie is a male greyhound and has just arrived with Forever Hounds Trust. He is a big boy, weighing is at 38 kg and is 29.5 inches from toe to shoulder! He’s a great big gorgeous dog though!

Yeboah
This male greyhound is a gentle giant who loves people. He is very affectionate and at almost three years old he really enjoys running around the paddock with a ball!
