Aoife, a beautiful brindle greyhound, has recently come into the care of Forever Hounds Trust from Ireland.
She is just two years old and displays most of the usual signs of a ‘shut down’ hound – she sits huddled against the wall with her head hung down when anyone comes close to her; it’s very hard to see a dog so afraid and unhappy.
Aoife has come into Forever Hounds Trust from a rescue in Ireland. She was originally sold by her breeder and was then passed from one person to the next, with little, if any love being shown to her. She was then found straying by the local dog warden. On contacting the original owner he requested for her to be put to sleep as he was facing a fine due to not following the correct procedure for transferring ownership and thought this way he wouldn’t be caught!
Aoife was due to be put to sleep that morning and her eventual rescuers had to fight tooth and nail to get this delayed and for steps to be put in place to convince the original breeder to change his put to sleep order and agree that she could be rehomed.
Miraculously they managed to achieve this, but poor Aoife then had to spend a further week in the pound until transfer of ownership papers were issued, even though she had a safe place to go to.
If it wasn’t for the determination and fantastic efforts of a couple of people in Ireland, Aoife would simply not be here today!
Now that she has come across the water and is safe in Forever Hounds Trust’s care we can show her the love, kindness and patience she needs to go from the ‘shut down’ greyhound that she currently is to the happy and relaxed dog she should be. Having worked with other ‘shut down’ greyhounds before we know it can be a long haul but we look forward to watching her flourish in our care.
Aoife’s name means beautiful, radiant, joyful. Although she is already beautiful, we can’t wait to see her become radiant and joyful too.
Aoife is just one of the hundreds of greyhounds and lurchers that we care for each year. To show your support for hounds like Aoife, who desperately need our help and to be snuggled up somewhere warm and safe, being shown the love and kindness they deserve, please consider donating to our Christmas Care Appeal.
