Arthritis in greyhounds
As you may know, we are calling for a phasing out of greyhound racing in the UK. No matter how well the dogs are looked after in the racing yards, every time they are put on the track they risk injury…or worse. Even if they don’t suffer any obvious injury, years of racing where their bodies experience intense physical strain can really take its toll.
The high-speed sprints and sharp, quick turns can put immense pressure on their joints. As they age, over time, this wear and tear may lead to arthritis, a painful condition that can affect their mobility and quality of life.
Signs of Arthritis:
- Stiffness or limping after getting up
- Reluctance to run or play
- Difficulty with stairs or jumping into the car
- Changes in behavior, such as irritability due to pain
But there’s hope! With the right care, we can help ease the discomfort of arthritis and give these wonderful dogs the comfortable retirement they deserve:
- Joint Supplements – Glucosamine and fish oils can support joint health
- Low-Impact Exercise – Gentle walks and swimming can help maintain mobility
- Therapies – Physical therapy, acupuncture, or laser treatments can relieve pain
- Weight Management – Keeping them lean reduces stress on their joints
- Vet Consultation – Medications and regular check-ups can make a world of difference
Retired racers may have escaped the track, but with love and proper care, they can still enjoy their golden years pain-free! 💙
