Help Jim Write His Next Chapter

When Jim arrived in our care, he didn’t arrive alone. At his side was his lifelong companion, Joyce – a devoted pair who had shared every chapter of their lives together. From the very beginning, we were determined to find a home for them together, so that this remarkable relationship could continue.

Jim is eight years old, and Joyce was ten. After retiring from racing, they had spent years together in trainers’ kennels, the two remained constant companions throughout it all.

When they first came to us, it was clear they both needed help. Years of dental disease had taken their toll, and each required further, significant dental work. They had their procedures and began their recovery and for the first time in a long time, their future was about comfort rather than expectation. They were safe, and we were hopeful that soon, they would be together in a loving home.

But sadly, rescue is not always filled with happy endings. Although ten is not considered particularly elderly, Joyce carried the wear of her years. Just as she seemed to be recovering, she took a sudden and devastating turn for the worse. Over the course of a weekend, her health deteriorated rapidly. She became extremely weak and could barely stand. It was painfully clear that her tired body was giving up.

In agreement with our vet, we made the kindest decision we could for her and Joyce passed peacefully, with dignity and love.

You so often hear the joyful stories of rescue – the dogs who find wonderful homes, the transformations, the second chances. Those stories are real, and they are worth celebrating. But there is another side too – the desperately sad side – which means making difficult decisions and doing right by a dog, no matter how much it hurts. Joyce knew safety and compassion in her final days and that is something we hold onto.

Now, eight-year-old Jim faces life without the companion he has always known. After years of never being alone, he is learning how to navigate life without Joyce by his side, and his kennel friends are helping him to adjust.

Jim is now looking for a new home and a new friend – a gentle, kind-hearted buddy who can offer comfort and companionship in this new chapter. He has so much love to give and deserves the chance of a forever home.
