Lizzie’s Great Run

08/11/2021

One of our supporters did an amazing job running The Great Bristol Run, raising funds for Forever Hounds Trust.

Lizzie says:

“Sunday the 19th September was an early morning rise, with jam on toast and a cup of tea making the perfect start to the day, I was ready to embrace the 13.1 miles of Bristol streets in the Great Bristol Run.

With support from my girlfriend Laura, gummy bears lining my pockets and my Forever Hounds Trust vest proudly on display I set off from the start line. Fellow runners, who had done this several times before, gave me encouragement and advice to take it slow. My goal was to complete it in two and a half hours.

Up to mile six was fine, plenty of gummy bears left! Miles seven to ten were harder but as the streets got busier it helped massively. After mile eleven I was on the home straight, a few hilly bits thrown in and I was sure my legs had left my body, but each step was for the Hounds.

Ecstatic to see the finish line, I made it across and in a dream time of two hours and ten minutes. As promised there was a very welcome bottle of chocolate milkshake handed to me by Laura. That consumed we headed back to collect our beloved hound Bert, who had chilled with my Dad for the day. We returned home for an evening of food and rest, although Bert seemed to be resting more than normal and looked a little sad, despite getting to wear my medal.

It wasn’t long between seeing Bert sad, getting him to the vets to be tested and discovering that he had a tumour taking over his kidney. The prognosis was not a good one and just ten days after my half marathon we took the hard decision to let him go peacefully with myself and Laura at the local vets.

Now, whether Bert hung around to make sure I got to the finish line we will never know. I managed to raise almost £200 for his fellow Hound friends. I do know that I have the greyhound bug and when the time is right I will take another loving and loyal one into my home and heart.”

Thank you Lizzie for your amazing efforts and we send our condolences for the loss of your lovely Bert.
