There was some good news for greyhounds in Peterborough today when the owners of the Peterborough Greyhound Stadium announced they were ending racing with immediate effect.
In a statement on their Facebook page, Peterborough Greyhounds said: “After much careful thought and consideration, and after 75 years, the Perkins family have decided to cease trading as a greyhound racing stadium with immediate effect.”
They statement also said that “the long-term viability of continuing to trade from the site as a greyhound racing stadium is unsustainable.”
The statement concluded by saying that the company remains active and are looking at other opportunities.
While the loss of another greyhound racing venue is good news long term for greyhound welfare, it does raise concerns about what will happen to the greyhounds raced in Peterborough, and whether suitable homes can be found for them all.
