Eleven-year-old Mavis has recently come into our care, and we were horrified to see the state of her teeth. They had clearly suffered years of neglect.
Her assessment had to be delayed as we didn’t know how much her pain was affecting her behaviour – our priority was to book her in for a dental, but before we could go ahead, we needed to check her bloods to make sure there was nothing else we needed to be worried about. Then, all being well, when she was pain-free we could get to know the real Mavis.
The bloods were okay, but the procedure was still obviously risky due to her age, however, we had to try and give this lovely lady a second chance at life. One tooth was so rotten that it actually fell out before the operation, but the remainder of her teeth were removed under anaesthetic. It became more complicated when a deep root from a previously rotten snapped tooth had to be extracted as well.
Mavis has obviously built up a resilience to neglect over the years, as she is recovering well from the operation and is bouncing back wonderfully! She really does have such a strength of spirit, and must feel so relieved that she doesn’t have to cope with the crushing pain of those awful teeth any more.
The total cost of the consultation, bloods and dental operation were £1,619.09, which comes at a time when we are already appealing for people to buy raffle tickets or donate so we can give these dogs the second chance at life they deserve. If you feel able to help with the costs of Mavis’s dental by purchasing raffle tickets (email fundraising@foreverhoundstrust.org) or donating, we would be very grateful.
Your donation will also ensure we can help other hounds like Mavis that we will sadly no doubt receive.
In the meantime, Mavis is now undergoing her assessment and looking forward to a bright future!
