It’s World Blood Donor Day, a day to thank existing voluntary blood donors and encourage new ones – giving blood really can save lives. This is not just within the human population, but within the canine population too.

My current two lurchers are both emergency blood donors and get called when needed. Pencil (left) is a positive donor, River (right) negative. My previous lurcher Billy was also a negative donor who donated regularly and saved a few lives over many years. Pencil is pictured after his most recent donation.

According to Pet Blood Bank UK for your dog to be a blood donor, they must meet certain criteria.
Fit and healthy
Between one and eight years old
Weigh more than 25kg (55 pounds / 3 stone 13 pounds)
Have a good temperament
Have never travelled outside of the UK and Ireland
Not on any medication
For their welfare they should also be confident and happy being handled.
