Volunteers Week: Our heroes for greyhounds and lurchers!

06/06/2025

Whilst we always recognise and appreciate the incredible hard work of our amazing volunteers, we really want to shout about it this week!

Our Volunteers

Our volunteers are integral to our charity, giving their time, love, and energy to help greyhounds and lurchers live better, happier lives. Whether it’s through fostering, fundraising, organising events, or even governing the charity (to name just a few roles!), our volunteers make an extraordinary impact every single day.

Pictured are just some of our amazing volunteers, We wish we could feature them all! ❤️

Thank you!

We’re sending a huge thank you to all our amazing volunteers — past and present!

𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘙𝘰𝘴𝘺 𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘨𝘰 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘸𝘴𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘺, 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘦: 𝘚𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳.

We want to give a special shoutout to Virginia, who in 1998 adopted her first greyhound Rosy whilst she was in Shropshire – this started her volunteering journey. Together Virginia and Rosy helped spread the word that greyhounds make wonderful companions, attending many shows across Shropshire and Cheshire.

Virginia subsequently moved to Gloucestershire, joining the local team and adopting Martha, Major Tom, and Buddy all of which were great Ambassadogs for Forever Hounds Trust.

Over the years, Virginia:

  • Fostered and adopted several hounds — including “failed fosters” Sally and Maggie!
  • Completed home checks
  • Helped with merchandise, accounts, and fundraising

Virginia has recently stepped away from volunteering after moving away — but her dedication, warmth, and support over the years has meant the world. She will always be part of the Forever Hounds family.

To all Forever Hounds Trust volunteers past and present. – you have all made, and continue to make a huge difference to the lives of sighthounds in need. Thank you! 🙏

Volunteers Week – Focus on fostering.

Eden, Sue’s Foster Dog

We are always looking for new ways to better help hounds in need, so are currently working on expanding our fostering scheme. Increasing our team of volunteer foster carers will make a huge difference to the dogs in our care!

Placing a dog into a foster home has obvious benefits for that dog; they get to spend their time in a loving home, and we can learn much more about their behaviour and homing needs during this time. Another reason for foster is that a dog may be recuperating from illness or injury, or they might not cope in a kennel environment.

We spoke to Sue, one of our incredible volunteer fosterers:

I heard about Forever Hounds Trust after my dog Poppy passed away, just one day short of her 14th birthday. Unusually, Poppy was a very laid-back Collie x Labrador, and a friend suggested that it might be an idea to think about having a greyhound. I got in touch to find out more about fostering as I thought that may give me some flexibility and freedom. I had to wait for the right dog as I also have some mobility issues but one day I got a call from Sophie about a dog called Eden; she was an older dog who needed veterinary treatment and a home to recuperate in. Sophie brought her to my house and in she trotted, it wasn’t long before she found the sofa – that was ok with me as Poppy loved the sofa too. I am really pleased that I have been able to help Eden and that she is now in her Forever Home, the house is a bit empty without her and now I am waiting for the next call from Sophie. I know that Forever Hounds match dogs to foster homes and forever homes so there may not be a dog for me for a little while, but I am here when the next one needs me!

Has the wonderful Sue encouraged you to become a foster carer for a hound in need? Keep your eyes peeled on our website and social media pages for the launch of our exciting new foster scheme next week! ☺️

Our four-legged volunteers!

We’ve focussed on some of the amazing work our volunteers do, but now we want to take a few minutes to put the spotlight on our unsung volunteer heroes – our Ambassadogs! 🐾

Whether they are representing Forever Hounds Trust at events, championing the great work that we do through blogs, helping our hounds with their rehabilitation, or even modelling for social media posts as and when needed, our Ambassadogs are valued members of our volunteer team – some of which can be seen here!

They support their humans in promoting Forever Hounds Trust, and of course, show the world what great dogs greyhounds and lurchers are! ❤️
