Earth Day is an annual event that brings together millions of people from around the world in support of the environment, highlighting the urgent action we need to take to save our planet.
We all love our furry friends, but many dog parents don’t realise just how much of an impact animal companions could potentially have on our planet.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can go green with your four-legged friend. Here are some simple and fun ways you and your dog can cut down on waste and do your part for Mother Earth this year:
🌍 At this time of year, the springtime weather is calling you and your dog outdoors, there’s no better way to celebrate Earth Day than go for a nice long walk! Walk from you home and explore all the beautiful places in your neighbourhood – don’t use the car to get there!
🌍 Using biodegradable bags for picking up and disposing of your dog’s waste will help decrease the use of planet-unfriendly plastics. This will also prevent the faeces contaminating nearby areas with bacteria, and attracting pests and parasites.
🌍 Consider buying eco-friendly dog food that which has been produced sustainably, or with minimal packaging (or with packaging that can be easily be recycled).
🌍 Instead of throwing out unwanted dog items, why not donate them to rescue centres. Click here for a list of what we would appreciate, but other rescues might want some of the things we can’t accept too – ask around!
🌍 Use Earth-Friendly Dog Shampoos. When your dog needs a bath, choose a natural, biodegradable product without chemicals.
🌍 Clean Green. Put away the bleach and protect your pets from toxic chemicals often found in household cleaning supplies by reaching for vinegar, baking soda or lemon to clean pet messes. These eco-friendly alternatives remove odours and kill mould and bacteria.
🌍 Adopt! Adopting a dog from a rescue instead of buying one from a breeder. More unwanted dogs in this world means a bigger impact on the environment. Offer a loving home for a dog that is already here needing one.
These little steps can make a big difference! We hope that you and your dog have great (and very green!) Earth Day.
