When we were asked to help a stray dog found by the dog warden in Port Talbot, we couldn’t say no. Hazel had already been to the vet as it was clear she wasn’t well. A scan had showed a heart murmur, and it was also identified that she had multiple mammary masses. But despite all that, we saw a little soul who deserved a second chance at life.
We welcomed Hazel into our care, giving her the love, comfort and the medical care she had probably never known. With her wise face and sweet nature she quickly stole our hearts. We watched her blossom in the safety of our kennels, her trusting nature shining through despite everything she had been through.
But sometimes, love and care aren’t enough. Despite treatment, sadly Hazel’s condition worsened – her tumours were progressing to an advanced stage. The only option to save her life was a complex surgery. Another heart scan showed that with the condition of her heart, the risks were very high. We had to face the heart breaking reality: she might not survive the operation, and even if she did, we couldn’t be sure she would have a good quality of life.
You often hear the happy stories of Rescue – a dog recovering from a life-threatening injury….a happy homing story, but sometimes Rescue can be the saddest of places. Sometimes it’s about doing the kindest thing for a dog who has already suffered too much. Hazel wasn’t showing any pain yet, so, in agreement with the vet we chose to give her the time she deserved – to feel safe, loved, and cherished, even if only for a little while. Every cuddle, every gentle word, every tiny moment was a gift we could give her.
Saying goodbye was incredibly hard, but her time with us, though short, was filled with warmth, comfort and care – a life she truly deserved. 🐾
Rest in Peace dear Hazel. 💔

Well Done Gareth! One Down, Three to Go!
