The Greyhound Star has reported that outline planning permission for the redevelopment of the Henlow greyhound racing stadium has been granted. This could see an end to greyhound racing on the site altogether.
Audience figures for greyhound racing have been falling across the globe for several years, and some UK greyhound racing stadiums have already closed their doors. The infamous Belle Vue Stadium in Manchester recently closed permanently and will be redeveloped for housing.
The reduction of audiences for greyhound racing shows just how outdated this so-called ‘sport’ is, which exploits dogs and treats them as a money-making commodity.
As a charity dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming greyhounds and lurchers, we see first hand the damage racing can do to these dogs, and as such look forward to the day when all greyhound racing is consigned to the past.
