Goodnight Dear Bertie

24/01/2025

We recently received some very sad news, Bertie, the 15 year old greyhound who many of you fell in love with after we helped him into a permanent foster home has sadly passed away.

Despite the sadness, we take a lot of comfort in the fact that he lived out the rest of his life happy and very much loved.

In July 2024 we were contacted by a member of the public asking if we could help a 15 year old greyhound who had been advertised on the web as needing a new home as his owner was sadly no longer able to care for him. Despite being nowhere near our Centre in Devon, we contacted his owner, and arranged to take Bertie into our care. One of our team drove up to the the Midlands to collect him and deliver him to a permanent foster home in Wales where he would spend the rest of his life.

What a wonderful six months they were for Bertie, who became affectionately known as Mr B. He had a great time with his three new greyhound sisters and wanted for absolutely nothing. We shared photos and video on our social media of him settling in, looking forward to Christmas and generally loving his life. We also kept his dad updated on how his precious boy was doing.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his original dad, who loved and cared for him for a long time until he was no longer able to due to his own ill health; he only ever wanted the very best for Bertie. Also to Bertie’s wonderful foster mum, who welcomed this precious boy into her heart and home knowing she might not have long with him due to his advancing years. We really can’t thank her enough for her kindness.

We thought this recent photo of him drinking out of his own mug was a fitting one to share, it captures Bertie’s personality and the love he felt right up to the time he sadly had to leave us.

Rest in peace beautiful boy, you will be missed. 🌈💔
